Jim and Erin Kelly are making the rounds Wednesday at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, as they promote Erin Kelly's new book, "Kelly Tough," that details her father's battle with cancer.
Among their stops was a special edition of NFL Nation TV in which both Kellys spoke about their hunting trips, their faith and some football, too.
The Hall of Fame quarterback shared his thoughts on Deflategate and the NFL's punishment of the New England Patriots, including a four-game suspension of star quarterback Tom Brady.
"No. 1, first thing is, when you do something sneaky, you're going to get caught," Kelly said. "Unfortunately, they got caught. I guess you got to pay a penalty to a certain point. Yeah, I did think it was a little much.
"But as long as they give him at least two games, that will be all right to me. Who do they play the second game of the season? Oh, they play the Buffalo Bills the second game of the season."
The NFL is expected to change its procedures about how balls are handled pregame as a result of the investigation.
"To be honest with you, when I played, I think the balls went right from the box to the field," Kelly said. "I don't even think I had an opportunity to massage it like they're able to do today or check pressure.
"Just remember when a football had less air in it, how easy that was to hold on to it and grip it. To somebody to try to strip you of it, it was hard to do. Especially if you played in cold weather, a hard football is at times really hard to hold on to.
"Yeah, there's an advantage to it," Kelly said. "But I don't think Tom Brady needed to do any of that. He could throw a football if it was overinflated. It really didn't matter because he's one of the greatest ever to play the game.
"It's just sad that it's come down to this," he said. "But the bottom line is, you do something that you're not supposed to do, sooner or later you're going to get caught. They got caught, they're going to pay the price. Maybe not quite as much as was levied on them. But you know what? Something has to happen.
"I still believe Tom Brady is one of the greatest to ever play the game and I don't think it's going to hurt his legacy at all."
