Bills hosting DL Alex Carrington on free-agent visit

The Buffalo Bills are hosting defensive lineman Alex Carrington on a free-agent visit Monday.

A third-round pick of the Bills in 2010, Carrington signed with the St. Louis Rams as a free-agent last offseason. He played in eight games, all as a reserve.

Carrington has experience in Rex Ryan's defense, having started the first three games of the 2013 season for then-Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine before suffering a season-ending quad injury.

Like in 2013, the Bills are expected to use a three-man front in their base defense. That season, Carrington was used in a five-technique role (lined up over the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle) alongside Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams.

Dareus and Williams remain the top two players on the defensive line, but the Bills have options with the third spot on their line. Ryan has indicated one possibility is for Stefan Charles to line up at nose tackle with Dareus and Kyle Williams at the five-technique spots.

Carrington is an unsigned unrestricted free agent, so signing him before May 12 would likely cause the team to lose a 2016 compensatory draft selection.
