Patriots inform FB James Develin that he will be placed on season-ending IR

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots informed fullback James Develin that he will be placed on season-ending injured reserve, a source confirms.

Develin broke his right tibia in the fourth quarter of Friday's 17-16 preseason win over the Panthers. He hoped to return in a timeframe of six to eight weeks, although some outside medical observers felt that was optimistic. He underwent surgery in Charlotte, staying behind as the team returned to town.

"Saw him yesterday; he's doing well," coach Bill Belichick said. "I think he has a good attitude. It was good to see him back here."

Develin played 19 percent of the offensive snaps last season, with his high total (30) coming against the Colts on Nov. 16 when the Patriots amassed 248 rushing yards while featuring Develin and the two-back set. Develin is also a regular contributor on the kickoff return unit in the wedge.

Develin was one of eight players not spotted at Tuesday's full-pads practice, a group including receiver Brandon LaFell, cornerback Darryl Roberts, linebacker Dane Fletcher (PUP), offensive linemen Marcus Cannon, Chris Barker and Bryan Stork and defensive tackle Chris Jones (PUP).

Quarterback Tom Brady returned, as expected, after missing Monday's session to be in U.S. District Court.

The Boston Herald first reported news of Develin being informed that he's being placed on injured reserve.
