Patriots punter Ryan Allen named AFC special teams player of the week

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots punter Ryan Allen was named the AFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week, the first time he's earned the honor since making the team as an undrafted rookie in 2013.

Against the Chargers, Allen had five punts; four of which were downed inside the 20. The other was a touchback. He finished with an average of 49.4 yards per punt and a net average of 44.0 yards.

Allen’s longest punt was 60 yards and his first four punts were downed at the 13-, 10-, 11- and 10-yard lines.

This season, Allen has punted 54 times for a total of 2,481 yards. He ranks 13th among NFL punters in average yards per punt (45.9) and 15th in net average (39.7). He also ranks 18th in punts downed inside the 20 (20).

Allen joins defensive lineman Chris Jones (blocked field goal in Week 7 vs. Jets) and wide receiver Julian Edelman (84-yard punt return for touchdown vs. Broncos) as Patriots players who were recipients of the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season.
