Visit with Cup makes Chara want it back

Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara has hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head in victory once during his career. This summer he was reminded what it feels like to be a winner.

For the second time in the last three summers, Chara spent time with close friend and Chicago Blackhawks veteran Marian Hossa during the Stanley Cup victory tour in Slovakia.

ESPN.com colleague Scott Powers covered the Cup’s recent trek through Europe and interviewed Chara at Hossa’s day with the Cup.

When asked if seeing the Cup up close drives him to want to win it again, Chara told Powers: “Every time. It’s pretty obvious when you win it once, you want to win it again. It’s obviously not possible every year. For me personally, I’m sure for our team, it’s a big challenge. We had a year that we fell behind and not able to make the playoffs because of a point or two points. Every time you want to win. You want to win the Stanley Cup. It’s a dream, it’s a goal for every hockey player. When you see it and you win, you have a taste for it. You want to have that same experience.”

Despite a 96-point campaign in 2014-2015, the Bruins failed to make the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. As a result, the Bruins fired general manager Peter Chiarelli and promoted Don Sweeney into that role. Boston’s roster received an overhaul and the players should benefit from a long offseason.

“Once the season’s over, it’s over,” Chara said. “You have to make some positive whatever it is. Long offseason you can really rest, you can really spend a lot of time in preparation for the upcoming season. But yeah, it’s been a long offseason. Usually you have a few weeks, 6-7 weeks and you have to go back to training on the ice. This time this summer was much longer. You have to make the best out of it. You have to spend some time with your family, obviously some quality time in training.”

Chara had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2014-2015. Not only did he miss 19 games due to a torn ligament in his left knee, but the 38-year-old never regained his form when he returned to action in mid-December. Look for Chara to have a strong 2015-2016 season.

“I feel good. Like I said, it’s been a long offseason. It’s exciting to go on the ice and starting a new season,” he said.
