Bruins sign Matt Irwin

The Boston Bruins and defenseman Matt Irwin have agreed on a one-year contract worth $800,000, the team announced Friday.

Irwin, 27, played in 53 games for the San Jose Sharks during the 2014-15 season, posting eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points, including a plus-3 rating. Overall, he has 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points in 153 NHL games with the Sharks.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner played two seasons for UMass (2008-2010) and posted 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 67 games. After he turned pro, Irwin played four seasons for San Jose's AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks.
