Top newcomer: Maryland Terrapins

The newest crop of college football players are starting to arrive on campuses all over the country. Freshmen and transfers will make their first impressions at summer classes and workouts with their new, veteran teammates in the next couple of weeks. Most will be hoping to lay the groundwork for an immediate impact this season. This week on the Big Ten blog, we will be identifying the player from each of the league’s teams who has the best chance to become a well-known name by the end of the fall.

Up next: the Maryland Terrapins.

Top newcomer: QB Tyrell Pigrome

D.J. Durkin's first recruiting class with the Terrapins was notable mostly for who wasn't included. Star quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who had been committed under previous coach Randy Edsall, flipped to Ohio State. Durkin had to scramble a little bit but did end up signing a pair of signal-callers, including Pigrome out of Alabama.

Pigrome is listed at just 5-foot-9, and his odds of playing quarterback right out of the chute are pretty low. But there's a good chance that new offensive coordinator Walt Bell will find a place for him somewhere in his high-tempo attack. Listen to what Bell had to say about Pigrome on signing day:

"Tyrell has the chance to be one of the most dynamic players in the class because of his incredible athleticism," Bell said. "He’s very comparable to some of the spread quarterbacks that I have had in the past.”

Durkin said that Pigrome will "be a household name around here real soon.”

Will it be 2016? Probably not quite yet, but Pigrome has a chance to make an impact on a team in need of playmakers.
