Mark Dantonio, Michigan State thinking about copying Michigan's spring break plans

Jim Harbaugh's plan to take Michigan to IMG Academy in Florida for practice over spring break has drawn the ire of the SEC. But the Wolverines' in-state rivals could potentially copy the idea.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was asked about the Michigan plan on Thursday night at a fan event in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Here's what he had to say, according to MLive.com:

"I think it's creative; there's no question about that," Dantonio said. "From our standpoint, we've never thought to do that, but we're thinking about it nowadays."

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey raised objections to Michigan's spring practice getaway earlier this week, saying players should not have to give up their free time to practice during spring break. The SEC has asked the NCAA football oversight committee to review the situation.

But there's currently no NCAA or Big Ten rule that prohibits teams from taking their spring practices on the road or working during the school's spring break. So Dantonio is thinking about holding a spring practice session far away from campus in the future.

"If we want to go to Florida or someplace else in Texas or something like that, it would be our option to do that, and I guess that's allowed right now," Dantonio said. "I do think it's important to have a level playing field."

Hey, maybe the Wolverines and Spartans can split travel costs and bunk somewhere warm together for spring break 2017. Maybe even hold a scrimmage, followed by limbo contests on the beach. Nah.

While Dantonio apparently doesn't have a problem with Harbaugh's ploy, Dantonio's former top assistant does. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi, the former Michigan State defensive coordinator, told CoachingSearch.com that he thinks spring break should be reserved for time away for football.

"Spring ball, I think you need to be on campus,” Narduzzi said. “They’re also student-athletes, not just athletes. … If I was a high school player, and you’re telling me I couldn’t go to Cancun or Daytona on spring break, I’d be kind of like, ‘Are you serious?’ I think kids need to stay fresh, and they need a break."
