TCU Horned Frogs taking low-risk gamble on Kenny Hill

Kenny Hill is indeed starting over at TCU, he confirmed to the Fort Worth Star Telegram on Thursday night. The former Texas A&M quarterback will enroll in June and acknowledged he attended TCU practices this spring in an effort to get a head start.

Hill was expected to land in Fort Worth ever since he left A&M in January, and it's easy to see why Gary Patterson would take a chance on him. He'll spend a season learning the Horned Frogs' somewhat familiar Air Raid attack and, if all goes well, reemerge as the successor to Trevone Boykin in 2016.

That's the most optimistic reading of this move, and surely some TCU fans will wonder whether Hill joining the team is worth the potential risk. After achieving September stardom last year, Hill hit a rough patch with a three-game losing streak and was benched, then later suspended for off-field issues. He'll need to regain confidence after sitting out the Aggies' final five games.

But I don't see anything wrong with trying to bring more competition to your quarterback room. Hill's competition next year would be Foster Sawyer, Grayson Muehlstein and commits D'Eriq King and Brennen Wooten. His presence and SEC experience makes them better, just as Matt Joeckel's knowledge of Air Raid offense made him a major asset on the sideline helping Boykin last season.

A stint on TCU's sideline should be humbling for "Trill" Hill, and if he makes any more off-field mistakes, Patterson can cut ties and move on with the original plan. Patterson and his offensive coordinators did their research before taking Hill in, and the reward down the road could be significant.
