Big 12 recruiting scorecard

Here's the latest on the recruiting trail in the Big 12 as the spring evaluation period continues:

BAYLOR

Total commits: 8

ESPN300 commits: 5

The latest: Baylor made the top five for ESPN 300 defensive tackle Kendell Jones, the mammoth lineman from nearby Killeen, Texas. He's expected to make his commitment on Saturday from among BU, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU. There were reports last week that Jones has already picked Bama, so don't be shocked if the Crimson Tide win out. Still, BU and the in-state schools will keep pushing for Jones the rest of the year.

IOWA STATE

Total commits: 0

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: The Cyclones still do not have a commitment for 2016 and are still pushing hard for two priority targets, in-state offensive guard Jake Heinrich and Nebraska tight end Noah Fant. The Cyclones are reportedly even with everyone else for Heinrich, a three-star prospect, while Fant has put ISU in his top four along with Iowa, Nebraska and Vanderbilt.

KANSAS

Total commits: 4

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: The Jayhawks' latest commitment came from junior college offensive tackle Joe Malanga. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound lineman began his career at Utah State before transferring to Snow College. KU also recently found a late addition for their 2015 class in Navarro CC linebacker Jayd Kirby, who can enroll this summer and will have three years of eligibility.

KANSAS STATE

Total commits: 2

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: With a quarterback and tight end already on board, K-State will keep pursuing its options at running back. Keep an eye on A.J. Taylor from the Kansas City area. The Wildcats would need to beat out the likes of Missouri, Wisconsin and Notre Dame for the three-star back, who's already drawing a lot of attention and a dozen offers.

OKLAHOMA

Total commits: 4

ESPN300 commits: 1

The latest: Oklahoma is in great shape with ESPN's No. 3 running back, Devwah Whaley of Beaumont (Texas) Central. He released his top 10 on Monday afternoon and included the Sooners after taking an unofficial visit to Norman this spring. This could end up being a battle among Texas A&M, OU and Texas whenever Whaley is ready to decide.

OKLAHOMA STATE

Total commits: 6

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: OSU could find itself in a battle to keep its quarterback pledge. Nick Starkel chose the Cowboys back when he had only three FBS offers, but he has continued to impress this spring and reportedly has the attention of Texas A&M. The Aggies have yet to take a quarterback for their 2016 class. Don't be surprised if more coaches check in on Starkel this spring and take a liking.

TCU

Total commits: 8

ESPN300 commits: 4

The latest: TCU brought in one of the nation's most coveted junior college linemen on a visit last week. Tate Leavitt, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound tackle, also checked out Texas Tech during his stop in the Lone Star State. The former Ohio signee is now at Hutchinson CC in Kansas and is reportedly set to visit Illinois, Louisville and Kentucky next.

TEXAS

Total commits: 4

ESPN300 commits: 2

The latest: The Longhorns got a chance to host the nation's No. 24 overall recruit, safety Brandon Jones, on an unofficial visit this weekend and also got to make an impression on Hezekiah Jones, perhaps the No. 1 receiver in the state of Texas for 2017. They could get a visit in the near future from ESPN 300 offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell, an LSU commit who was recently offered.

TEXAS TECH

Total commits: 8

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: The Red Raiders are rolling this spring after a week that featured three new pledges: quarterback Jett Duffey, running back Bryson Denley and wide receiver Antoine Cox-Wesley. Duffey was a sleeper find who recently qualified for the Elite 11 finals. Denley and Cox-Wesley hail from Cibolo (Texas) Steele High, whose former head coach Mike Jinks is Tech's running backs coach. That pipeline to Steele has paid off with four commitments since Jinks was hired.

WEST VIRGINIA

Total commits: 8

ESPN300 commits: 0

The latest: The Mountaineers are battling Wisconsin for Pittsburgh cornerback Therran Coleman and have reportedly taken the lead in a four-team battle that also includes Arizona State and Pitt. The 6-foot, 180-pound prospect was a two-way player at quarterback and defensive back as a junior.
