Big 12 weekend rewind: Week 11

Taking stock of Week 11 in the Big 12:

Team of the week: We’re splitting the honors here between Baylor and Kansas. The Jayhawks landed their first Big 12 victory of the season, blasting Iowa State 34-14. The win could give interim coach Clint Bowen a real shot at landing the permanent gig in Lawrence. Baylor, meanwhile, annihilated Oklahoma 48-14 to make a strong statement to the playoff selection committee it deserves one of the four coveted semifinal spots.

Disappointment of the week: How about disappointment of the season? Oklahoma was run out of its own stadium, as Baylor handed the Sooners their second-worst loss with Bob Stoops as coach. The Bears, who have now won three out of four in the series, outclassed Oklahoma in every way. After rolling past Alabama last year, the Sooners had playoff and Big 12 title aspirations before the season. Instead, it’s looking like that Sugar Bowl win was nothing more than an aberration for a program that has never seemed staler.

Big (offensive) man on campus: Quarterback Trevone Boykin was simply sensational in TCU’s 41-20 win over Kansas State. He rushed for a career-high 127 yards and three touchdowns and completed 23 of 34 passes for 219 yards and another score. He also produced a memorable moment for the Heisman voters with a somersault over three Wildcat defenders into the end zone. K-State, which had been stout defensively all year, simply had no answer for him.

Big (defensive) men on campus: Baylor linebacker Bryce Hager changed the game in Norman, with an interception he returned 36 yards to the Oklahoma 1-yard line. The pick helped give Baylor the 17-14 lead, and ignited the Bears’ 45 unanswered points. But the honor here goes to Texas defensive end Cedric Reed, who finished with 12 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble in Texas’ 33-16 win over West Virginia. He also delivered the key play of the game when he crashed through the line of scrimmage to sack Clint Trickett for a safety in the fourth quarter. Reed had been quiet this season, but he was anything but Saturday.

Special-teams player of the week: After struggling to begin the year, Baylor kicker Chris Callahan has nailed his last 12 field goal attempts, including two against the Sooners. Callahan started out 1-of-6 on field goals. But as other kickers in the Big 12 struggled Saturday, Callahan has remained on point.

Play of the week: Boykin said afterward he’s "not a gymnast." But he sure looked like one on his flip into the end zone. The play gave TCU a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter, and the Horned Frogs complete control of the game.

Stat of the week: By beating Iowa State, Bowen now has as many Big 12 wins as Kansas predecessors Turner Gill and Charlie Weis.

Quote of the week: “Just ready for the bye week.” – Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty, in his first comment with reporters after beating the Sooners. Last week, Petty answered every postgame question with, “Ready for OU.”
