Josh Doctson looks like draft steal for Redskins

The Washington Redskins didn't need a first-round receiver heading into the NFL draft but general manager Scot McCloughan had no hesitation when former TCU receiver Josh Doctson was still available when his team was set to pick at No. 22, writes Liz Clarke of the Washington Post.

"I'm sure none of you thought we'd take a receiver because we've got depth," McCloughan told Clarke. "But that was the best football player on the board."

There's a real chance Doctson will prove to be the best value pick of the first round. Many draft analysts considered him the top receiver in the draft, so to land him in the early 20s could be a steal for Washington.

This roundup of what draft experts had to say about Doctson's selection, by the Dallas Morning News' Adam Grosbard, makes it clear why McCloughan took Doctson despite having DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon already on the roster as proven pass catchers.

I was fortunate enough to see Doctson's 18 receptions for 267 yards and three touchdowns at Texas Tech last season. It was, by far, the best individual performance I witnessed first-hand last season and one of the few times I've watched a receiver dominate a game. Doctson may not be a guaranteed starter for Washington but I'm guessing he becomes a key player in Washington's offense in 2016.
