Ravens' free-agent rankings: No. 8

Let's continue the ranking of the Baltimore Ravens' 15 free agents (not including the recent cuts of Jacoby Jones and Chris Canty):

No. 8 Jeromy Miles

Position: Safety/special teams

The good: Miles is not only a core special-teams player but he also received increased playing time on defense. He started two games toward the end of the season as the Ravens were trying to find some stability in the secondary. Miles delivered a couple of turnovers, making an interception and recovering a fumble. His strength is special teams where he blocked a kick (which led to a touchdown against the Jaguars), forced two fumbles (including one in the playoffs) and made five tackles.

The bad: He's not a starter-quality safety. Miles can hold his own if he has to fill in on defense. His biggest mistake in his two seasons with the Ravens came in 2013, when he was offside on a surprise onside kick in Pittsburgh.

The bottom line: Miles increased his value to the Ravens this past season by making more plays on special teams and showing he could play safety in a pinch. It's very likely that Miles returns because he provides experience on special teams and comes at a good value, which is important for a team that won't have much cap space.
