Report: Cardinals prepared to offer Sean Weatherspoon two-year deal

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals might be filling one of their top needs early in free agency.

According to a report by ESPN.com reporter Vaughn McClure, the Cardinals are prepared to offer Atlanta linebacker Sean Weatherspoon a two-year contract worth between $3 million and $4 million per year.

McClure reported the Falcons were close to re-signing Weatherspoon on Friday morning, but the deal fell apart.

Free agents cannot sign with new teams until 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Weatherspoon has been one of Arizona’s primary targets during free agency and will fill a need at inside linebacker. McClure wrote that when Weatherspoon was healthy in Atlanta, “he was a versatile inside linebacker who could cover, blitz and make plays all over the field.”

Injuries have started to define Weatherspoon’s career. He missed all of 2014 because of his Achilles. In 2013, he missed nine games with a Lisfranc injury. He missed three games in 2012 with an ankle injury. He managed to play all 16 games in 2011 but played in only 11 as a rookie in 2010.
