Knile Davis as featured back is nothing new

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With Jamaal Charles hobbled by a high ankle sprain, Knile Davis should again be the featured back for the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday's game against the Dolphins in Miami.

That's nothing new for Davis or the Chiefs. Going back to last season and including the playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts, take a look at their numbers in the chart.

Obviously, Charles has been far more effective than Davis. But the point is that Davis has assumed much of the workload recently from Charles.

Some of that has been intentional on the part of the Chiefs. They removed Charles from the lineup and replaced him with Davis early in blowout wins last season over Washington and Oakland. Charles was a healthy scratch in the final regular-season game last year against San Diego.

Some of it was unplanned. Charles left the lineup for good in the first quarter of the playoff game and then last week's game against Denver.

But things have shifted and while I'm not suggesting Charles' time as the featured back has or should be coming to an end, I'm wondering whether their complete reliance on him is finished.

Another thing worth noting is that Davis' best statistical game, 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers last season, happened when the Chiefs planned for him as their featured back. They knew Charles wasn't going to play, built their game plan around Davis' abilities and then let him practice as the featured back.

That will likely be the case this week against the Dolphins. It will be interesting to see how Davis responds this time.
