Chiefs Camp Report: Day 9

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University:

• Injuries may eventually help the Chiefs thin their crowd at wide receiver. Veteran Kyle Williams was the latest receiver to leave practice because of a hamstring injury. He pulled up while running a route and immediately grabbed his leg. Williams was having a strong camp but an extended absence might force the Chiefs to turn elsewhere for receiving help. Junior Hemingway has missed almost a week with a sore hamstring. Whatever chance Mark Harrison had of making the team is probably gone after his hamstring injury. Young receivers Frankie Hammond Jr. and Albert Wilson again made their share of plays at practice.

• The Chiefs are giving starting left guard Jeff Allen a significant amount of snaps at left tackle and right tackle with the starters. Tackle isn't foreign to Allen. He was a tackle in college at Illinois. The Chiefs are having trouble finding a suitable reserve at tackle, so Allen's work at the position could be more than just for emergency situations. The Chiefs may eventually shift Allen to tackle during the regular season if either of the starters, Eric Fisher and Donald Stephenson, has to leave the lineup.

• The Chiefs wasted little time in getting newly signed safety Steve Gregory some snaps in practice. Until signing with the Chiefs on Thursday, Gregory was hanging out at home in Syracuse with his newborn daughter. "I've been trying to stay in shape all summer just waiting for my number to be called." The Chiefs appear intent on getting a look at two of their developmental safeties, Malcolm Bronson and Daniel Sorensen. But Gregory's experience from his eight years with the Patriots and Chargers may eventually prove valuable. "He's played in various systems so he's familiar probably with everything we're doing," defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said.

• The Chiefs have yet to make a roster move involving safety Sanders Commings, but it sounds like that's on its way. Commings was injured in practice Wednesday when he crumpled to the ground after running back Jamaal Charles put a move on him in the open field. Trainer Rick Burkholder clarified the injury, which the Chiefs initially said was a broken ankle. Burkholder said has Commings has a high sprain to his right ankle, an injury so severe that he needed surgery. Commings also twisted the leg so drastically that he broke the fibula.

• The Chiefs' next practice session is Saturday at 9:15 a.m. ET/8:15 a.m. CT.
