Ryan Fitzpatrick takes an old-school approach to film study

HOUSTON -- The line of questioning began as part of something else.

I'd read this story by Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal, that theorized NFL defenses were at a severe disadvantage because of the increased film-watching by offensive players on portable tablets that made subtleties in their systems glaringly obvious.

So I asked Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick if he thought that was true.

Turns out...

"I don’t even use the iPad," Fitzpatrick said. "I think that’s probably a little fabricated to be honest. I spend all my time watching film in the facility."

It's not that he's never tried it before. He just doesn't like it as much.

"If I’m going to be watching film, I’m at the facility watching film," he said. "If I’m going to be home, I’m with my family."

Fitzpatrick, 31, played a lot of years where tablet film-watching was not normal. So I checked with another fellow 30-something about it and found he's not alone in that mentality. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett also prefers coming into the facility to watch film. (He's also not totally sure what kind of phone he has.)

For Fitzpatrick, watching at the facility is easier.

"When you’re trying to look at very specific things on a game, you can definitely sort and do things more efficient here than you can on the iPad," Fizpatrick said. "But a lot of it for me is just keeping football and family separate."
