The Film Don't Lie: Texans

A weekly look at what the Houston Texans must fix.

As the Texans prepare to play the Buffalo Bills, they are focused on fixing some of the problems that bit them in their 30-17 loss to the New York Giants. One big one has been their run defense.

The Texans gave up 193 yards rushing to the Giants and 4.6 yards per carry. They gave up a league-high 14 first downs by rush. The total was significantly higher than the league average of 108.3 rushing yards allowed per game. It's not as if the Texans were facing an especially successful rushing offense. The Giants averaged 67 rushing yards per game -- 29th in the league -- in their first two games.

Through the first three games of the season, the Texans rank 25th in rushing yards per game allowed, and are giving up a whopping 5.18 yards per carry, ranking 31st in the NFL.

Breaking this down by downs, Texans opponents have been most successful on second down. Against the run, the Texans are giving up an average of 4.6 rushing yards per play on first down, 6.84 on second down and 4.5 on third down. Those together proved problematic.

Inside linebacker Brian Cushing had one of the best run-stop rates of any inside linebacker this week, according to Pro Football Focus. That's in part because Giants running back Rashad Jennings was so successful getting to that second level. Better play up front from guys like defensive end Jared Crick and nose tackle Jerrell Powe will help.
