Whiz clarifies why Greene ran outside

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Titans and Ken Whisenhunt have spoken a great deal about finding plays and situations that line up to the specific strengths of players.

So I found it curious when the team sent running back Shonn Greene wide to the left sideline to try to get around the corner twice in the second quarter. The plays were on consecutive series when the Titans were pinned against their own goal line.

Both Bishop Sankey and Dexter McCluster are better at getting to the outside, while Greene is a better inside runner.

It seemed like misuse. Wouldn’t it have had a better chance with a different back taking the handoff?

“I think we would have had a better chance if we’d have hit the hole up inside where it was,” he said. “There was a hole inside if you want to go back and look at it, you can see it. I think that was a reaction, which happens, to some of the runs earlier in the game that went outside. But that run was not designed to go outside.”

Very interesting answer. I was too quick to presume Greene was going where he was supposed to.
