Gauging Ravens free agents' chances of returning

The Baltimore Ravens' 14 unrestricted free agents can sign with any team starting at 4 p.m. ET March 10. Let's take an early look at who has the best chances of returning to the Ravens (listed in alphabetical order):

Antoine Cason, cornerback: He was signed late in the season when they desperately needed to add another cornerback. Cason played sparingly, and the Ravens preferred inexperienced Rashaan Melvin over him, which says a lot. Chances of returning: 0 percent.

Terrence Cody, nose tackle: The Ravens don't need Cody after drafting Timmy Jernigan in the second round and picking up Lawrence Guy off waivers. This sums up Cody: nine weeks on the physically unable to perform list, six weeks inactive and one game played. Chances of returning: 15 percent.

Morgan Cox, long snapper: Cox has been highly regarded by the organization, but his value actually increased after he suffered a season-ending ACL injury midway through the season. Cox's replacements, Kevin McDermott and Patrick Scales, both struggled at times, putting more emphasis on re-signing their long snapper of the past five seasons. Chances of returning: 85 percent.

Owen Daniels*, tight end: He delivered a solid season in replacing Dennis Pitta and showed he could make an impact at 32 years old. Daniels would be a good insurance policy for another year considering Pitta is coming off another hip injury and Crockett Gillmore is still developing. The return of offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak bumped up the odds of Daniels coming back. Chances of returning: 60 percent.

Justin Forsett*, running back: Forsett wants more than a one-year deal, and the Ravens will likely oblige. The Ravens know Forsett fits their system, even though they may want to split more of the workload with Lorenzo Taliaferro and perhaps another young runner. Teams could be leery of Forsett's age (he turns 30 next season) and his ability to repeat this breakthrough season. Chances of returning: 75 percent.

Danny Gorrer, cornerback: This could be a case where the Ravens sign Gorrer during the second wave of free agency if they aren't happy with what they have at cornerback after the draft and first couple months of free agency. Gorrer has potential to develop into an adequate nickelback. Chances of returning: 35 percent.

Pernell McPhee, linebacker: McPhee is this year's version of Arthur Jones. The Ravens want to re-sign him, but McPhee's breakout season in rushing the passer (7.5 sacks, 21 quarterback hits and 35 hurries) presumably prices him out of what the team could give him. The Ravens would miss his ability to collapse the pocket from up the middle. Chances of returning: 25 percent.

Jeromy Miles, strong safety: Miles has been core special-teams player for the Ravens the past two seasons, and he earned more playing time on defense. He made two starts in the second half of the season. The Ravens, though, may want to get younger and cheaper at this spot. Chances of returning: 55 percent.

Will Rackley, guard: He was brought in for depth at offensive line, and he missed most of training camp with a concussion before being placed on injured reserve. The Ravens are bringing back their top seven offensive linemen in 2015. Chances of returning: 0 percent.

Jah Reid, guard/tackle: A major disappointment, Reid made seven starts in four seasons with the Ravens after being drafted in the third round. He was active for four games this season. Chances of returning: 5 percent.

Aaron Ross, cornerback: The Ravens could've used Ross this season, but he tore his Achilles tendon during the conditioning drill for training camp. He has only played four games the past two seasons because of injuries. That's not a good sign for a cornerback in his 30s. Chances of returning: 0 percent.

Darian Stewart*, strong safety: Some in the Ravens' organization consider Stewart among the team's most underrated players. But the Ravens need to upgrade at the safety position. Stewart would be a good fall-back option, although his return may be tied to secondary coach Steve Spagnuolo (who has been linked to the New York Giants' defensive coordinator opening). Chances of returning: 50 percent.

Torrey Smith*, wide receiver: The Ravens don't have anyone on their current roster to replace Smith as their deep threat, and Smith wants to return. In fact, he said he would like to get a deal done with the Ravens before the start of free agency. What works in the Ravens' favor is that Smith is a high-character player and he has quarterback Joe Flacco in his corner. Chances of returning: 65 percent.

Tyrod Taylor, quarterback: The Ravens drafted Keith Wenning in the sixth round last year for a reason. That likely spelled the end of Taylor's future with the team. Even if the Ravens don't think Wenning is ready to become the primary backup, they could probably find a one-year stopgap that's just as viable as Taylor. Chances of returning: 20 percent.
