PITTSBURGH -- Strong safety Troy Polamalu is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ nominee for the Salute to Service Award.
Polamalu is active in a number in charitable endeavors but working with and advocating for veterans is particularly important to the eight-time Pro Bowl and his wife, Theodora, whose grandfather fought in World War II.
The two established a foundation that benefits veterans and they work with Operation Once in a Lifetime, which grants wishes to United States soldiers and their families, as well as Pittsburgh-area VA hospitals to improve facilities.
The Polamalus recently hosted a Hawaiian luau to raise money for their foundation.
The winner of the fourth Salute to Service Award will be announced on Jan. 31, the night before Super Bowl XLIX.
