The Film Don't Lie: Ravens

A weekly look at what the Baltimore Ravens must fix:

The Ravens know the Tennessee Titans are going to blitz them Sunday. If that wasn't the Titans' plan before, it certainly became a big part of it after watching the Ravens and quarterback Joe Flacco struggle against pressure the past two weeks.

The most-blitzed quarterback this year, Flacco did not handle the increased pass rush at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He completed only 54.8 percent of his passes against the blitz in those two games. His passer rating against five or more rushers was 55.6 during that span (28th in the NFL), and his yards per attempt was 5.1 (27th in the league).

On Sunday night, Flacco and the Ravens were physically outmatched by the Steelers' blitzes. Linemen lost their one-on-one battles, with center Jeremy Zuttah (allowed seven quarterback hurries) getting beat the most often. Flacco also didn't get the ball to the "hot" receiver.

There have been times this season when Flacco showed more elusiveness against pressure and extended plays by breaking out of the pocket. The relentless pressure on Sunday made Flacco look confused and indecisive. The blame doesn't fall all on Flacco. His blockers have to give him more time, and his receivers have to get open quicker because, as coach John Harbaugh puts it, teams are going to continue to blitz until the Ravens make them pay.

The Titans are an aggressive defense, ranking 11th in the NFL with 109 total blitzes, but Tennessee doesn't have the most effective pass rush. Quarterbacks have thrown six touchdowns and one interception when the Titans blitz this season.
