Geno Smith: 'We're going to the playoffs'

Former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round Friday with the No. 39 overall pick. Moments later, Smith pulled a Jets-like move.

During a television interview with the NFL Network, Smith said of the Jets, “We’re going to the playoffs next year.”

Wait. ... What?

For starters, the Jets are far from a playoff team. But that shouldn’t be Smith’s focus anyway. He is third on the depth chart and has to first beat out Mark Sanchez and David Garrard before he sees the field. Smith is the last person who should be talking playoffs in late April. He has to focus on learning the playbook.

This is not a good start for Smith. This weekend alone, he's shown some lack of composure to handle the spotlight. The bright lights of New York will be very intense and Smith needs to grow up fast.

The circus tent is already full in New York and the Jets do not need any more characters. Smith has the game and the work ethic to potentially win the quarterback job, which is why the Jets drafted him. But his focus from this day forward needs to be on getting better everyday, not the postseason.
