Duke surprises walk-on DE Danny Doyle with scholarship

Scholarship season has commenced, and after the stunt David Cutcliffe pulled this week, Duke has set the early standard for programs around the country rewarding walk-ons in memorable fashion.

In a video posted Tuesday by the Blue Devils’ video department, Cutcliffe has a team meeting interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone. The call, it turns out, is from the parents of walk-on defensive end Danny Doyle, who is seated in the back of the room.

You probably know how the rest of this goes … not that it makes it any less chilling.

Kudos to the Duke players for keeping their cool in the early part, as they clearly knew what was about to happen.

As for Doyle, the scholarship was a reward for a rising junior from Bradenton, Florida, who saw some action in 2014 as a freshman. Doyle recovered a fumble in Duke’s spring game last month, and he was listed at the top of the program’s post-spring depth chart, according to the (Raleigh) News & Observer.

We look forward to more of these moments as summer workouts and fall camps near.
