Former NC State receiver aims to be president

Jacoby Brissett got plenty of questions about his receiving corps during ACC Kickoff last week, and that's largely because he'll be without his favorite target from 2014.

After a sterling freshman season in which he racked up 45 catches for 616 yards, Bo Hines decided to transfer to Yale, where he’s continuing to play football but focusing on academic pursuits.

When I asked Brissett if he could imagine doing the same thing, he gave a fair assessment of the situation: "No," he said, "but I also don't think I can be president of the United States."

Hines, on the other hand, does have that goal, and he talked with the Raleigh News & Observer about his political ambitions and decision to leave NC State.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity in the realm of academics, one that sets me up for a great future," Hines told the News & Observer. “Hopefully, I'll get my degree and get a shot at the NFL. Then I can go to law school and jump into politics."

Hines is a Republican, and given the number of politicians already vying for the party's nomination, he could probably toss his hat in the ring right now.

Instead, he’s keeping a focus on football -- and on NC State, he told the News & Observer.

Hines and Wolfpack quarterback Jacoby Brissett remain close friends. Brissett recently attended Hines' sister's wedding in Charlotte. Hines said he will be rooting for his former quarterback this season.

“He’s awesome,” Hines said. “He’ll always be a part of my family.”

As for the Wolfpack, they’ll open camp with Bra'Lon Cherry (27 catches, 354 yards, 3 TDs) as their top receiver, but head coach Dave Doeren is optimistic he'll have options -- including Nyheim Hines, another true freshman with a lot of upside, a familiar last name and, presumably, fewer political ambitions.
