NC State teaches its players table manners

At ACC Kickoff last week, we talked with NC State coach Dave Doeren about how the program prepares its athletes for off-field challenges, given the recent uptick in news about domestic violence, and he said the school takes a more universal approach.

"Every Wednesday, we meet with our players on off-the-field topics -- not just things that get you in trouble, but things that can help you in life," Doeren said. "We've had etiquette dinners, brought in clothiers to show them how to tie their ties. We've had domestic violence people, alcohol, drugs, gambling, agents -- you name it. The goal is creating a better person, better player, better husband, father, teacher. I believe the guys that handle their lives off the field have an easier time showing you what they can do on the field. So we do a lot with that."

It's a great philosophy -- and certainly not one limited to NC State -- and now we get some inside insight into how it works. NC State posted a video showing the specifics of the etiquette dinners Doeren discussed, and it's pretty entertaining (and informative).

Lots of good advice here, highlighted by Troy Vincent Jr.'s insight: "You put all your junk on your bread plate." That's really true in any situation, right?

One quibble with Cole Cook though: There should be no limit to how much sugar goes in your sweet tea.
