Scott Shafer is pleased with his new OC's offensive scheme

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer has been building up his new-look offense, but he is not ready to give out many details.

There has to be some surprise for opposing defensive coordinators once the season kicks off.

But if you really want to read between the lines, perhaps this statement about what offensive coordinator Tim Lester is implementing stands out.

"You know I’m a defensive guy," Shafer said. "And even I’m scratching my head at how to defend this offense."

There are talented skill players returning, so a new scheme that takes advantage of their skills should create many more scoring opportunities than last season. Terrel Hunt is back and looks completely re-energized. Shafer said he has seen a completely different determination out of Hunt headed into his final season and the quarterback is clearly eager to show everyone the impact he can make on the offense.

Shafer also mentioned Brisly Estime, Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips as three key players with opportunities for big seasons. Given the players returning at the skill positions, it stands to reason that losing Ashton Broyld won’t have a huge impact. Broyld never really lived up to the hype that followed him to Syracuse.

Estime, Ishmael and Phillips have all shown much bigger flashes. Now we will just have to wait and see how the new Syracuse offense performs once the season kicks off.
