Syracuse senior Ashton Broyld has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules, coach Scott Shafer announced Tuesday morning.

The move marks the end of an Orange career that never quite lived up to its high school billing. The multi-purpose threat was a three-star prospect from Rush Henrietta (New York) High in the Class of 2011, where he was the state's Class AA player of the year. Broyld spent a year at Milford Academy before starting his Syracuse career.

In 25 career games with the Orange, Broyld caught 74 passes for 679 yards and had 38 carries for 173 yards and one touchdown. He missed eight games last season because of a lower-body injury.

The 6-foot-4, 221-pound Broyld had been used in a number of different roles at Syracuse and was expected to play the hybrid position this season in coordinator Tim Lester's offense -- a dynamic running and receiving threat aimed at confusing defenses. Ervin Philips and Ben Lewis figure to see more action in that spot with Broyld now out of the picture.
