Patrick Skov transfer big news for Georgia Tech

The Georgia Tech B-back group was so depleted at the end of spring practice, its top player spent exactly two weeks at the position.

That is why the news that Stanford fullback Patrick Skov plans to transfer to the Jackets is so huge. While converted A-back/linebacker/receiever Marcus Allen showed promise in the spring game, the only reason he is at B-back is because of injuries to the top two players on the depth chart -- C.J. Leggett and Quaide Weimerskirch. Leggett is out for the season with a torn ACL; Weimerskirch is out indefinitely with a broken foot.

Even before their injuries, B-back was a major question mark. Synjyn Days, Zach Laskey and Matt Connors -- the top three B-backs last year -- are gone. Days and Laskey were dynamic in their roles, combining for 1,775 yards and 18 touchdowns to help Georgia Tech win the Coastal Division and the Capital One Orange Bowl.

Their size, strength and athleticism made them a pretty unstoppable duo and also helped the Jackets lead the nation in rushing last year, with 342.1 yards per game. Georgia Tech also must replace its top two A-backs, so it is understandable why Paul Johnson said, "We’ll be hard-pressed to be better on offense than we were last year."

Even with Justin Thomas back.

Though Georgia Tech has not officially announced the addition, Skov plans on arriving after he graduates from Stanford in June. His addition to the picture should at least help. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Skov has similar size to Days (6-2, 231) and Laskey (6-1, 218) in a position that requires tough yardage in the triple-option offense. If he is as physical as his brother, Shayne, then the Jackets will be mighty pleased.

Though Skov did not play much on offense at Stanford, perhaps this role is a good fit for him to make an impact. Georgia Tech will also have to rely on incoming freshmen Marcus Marshall -- the younger brother of Georgia back Keith Marshall -- and Mikell Lands-Davis when they arrive this summer. So essentially, four players in fall camp will all be learning how to play B-back on the fly. Skov, Allen, Marshall and Lands-Davis have never taken a snap in this offense in a game. Nor has Weimerskirch, who redshirted last year.

Should make for an interesting preseason.
