Louisville continued to bolster its depth in the secondary Tuesday, with the addition of former Washington safety James Sample.

The former three-star high school player spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with Washington, playing in only five total games. After deciding to transfer, Sample spent last year at American River College in California. He will be eligible to play next season, with two years of eligibility remaining.

"James is an outstanding football player who will help us fill a void on our football team,” coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement. "He has outstanding size at the safety position and will add immediate depth to this position on our football team."

Louisville must replace its two starting safeties from last season, Calvin Pryor and Hakeem Smith, making this position one of the biggest question marks on the defense headed into the offseason. Last week, reports surfaced that former Georgia safety Josh Harvey-Clemons also plans to transfer to Louisville. He played for defensive coordinator Todd Grantham with the Bulldogs.
